2011 Summer Movie Season - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides : Review & Analysis

Jack is Back!!!! Latest Pirates Installment Marks The Triumphant Return Of Iconic Captian Sparrow.
      By:  Brandon Porter

"Death Lies Before Us..As We Sail...To The Fountian of Youth." - Jack Sparrow

Johnny Deep returns as Captian Jack Sparrow in
the latest chapter of the Pirates of The Caribbean saga

The Story
Having conqured a curse, a kraken, and the infamous Davy Jones, Captian Jack Sparrow (Johnny Deep) is on a new adventure; this time to the mystical fountain of youth...Or at least that's what people are saying. Jack finds himself in an unusaual predicament when he discovers someone is stealing his identity and recriuting a crew to partake a voyage to the legendary fountian. Jack travels to London, England to locate the fraud and clear his name. The false Sparrow shockingly turns out to be Jack's former lover Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a woman who years ago he left and betrayed leaving her heartbroken and corrupted. She then tricks Jack into joining the crew of the Queen Anne's Revenge, with the Evil and Sinister Blackbeard (Ian McShane) as captain. Who also, as Jack discovers, is Angelica's father. Jack must now lead Blackbeard to the fountain to try and save his presumably doomed soul. But things start to get complcated when Jack's old nemisis and former pirate Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), now serving under the royal british navy, is on their trail, in addition to the resurfacing of his deep feelings for Angelica. With the spanish and british armies, the worlds most feared Pirate, man eating mermaids, zombies, and a corrupted old flame, Jack finds himself in the middle of possibly his biggest pinch yet. Will he get out of it alive or will the tale of Captian Jack Sparrow come to an abrupt end?

Analysis
Like critics and fans, my expectations for the new Pirates film were high. During development, the film went through some intresting changes to separat it from the other installments. The changes that the crew made to this film would either make or break the movie. One change in particular was the cast. Disney made a bold move letting most of the key characters from the previous films go. In this case, Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly who play Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. With those two not returning for the fourth film, it was clear that Disney wanted to center this Pirates on the films big star Jack Sparrow played by Johnny Deep. Surronding Deep with an entirly new cast and only a handful of series veterans Geoffery Rush and Kevin McNally, Disney made it clear they were taking the franchise in a new direction. The castings of Ian McShane and Penélope Cruz were solid additions giving Jack his own love intrest as opposed to him being the third wheel to Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan's love story. The pieces were in place as On Stranger Tides joined the 2011 Summer Movie Line-Up and looked to make a big box office splash. Looking at the history of the Pirates of The Caribbean films, the franchise has suffered from after gaining some impressive ground in Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl  in 2003, not being able to build on that momentum. Since the realese of the first film, critical ratings for the films have significantly sunk even though the financially they have dominated. The same result can unfortunatly be said for On Stranger Tides. Critics would think after a four year absence, Disney would be able fix the mistakes made in the previous two installments and finally bring the same great results as the first one. Sadly, That didn't happen. Rotten Tomatoes has given the film a 34% out of 100 which is the lowest out of any of the previous three movies. Despite the critical fail, the film has set the years best box office mark garnering $90.1 million dollars making it the higest grossing film of 2011 and the Summer movie season surppasing Fast Five's $86.2 million dollar mark last month. Critics are coming to the conclusion that the Pirates franchise got lucky in the first film and the series should just throw in the towel and end the tale of Jack Sparrow here. But recent talks of a fifth film are starting to surface giving the realization that the franchise may, be down, but it's not going down without a fight.

Review
Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa look on at the
enemy camp looking to steal the silver
chalices from the spanish

One of the biggest  films of the summer that I wanted to see was Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I was lucky enough to catch it on the second day it was open in IMAX 3D. Though I'm not a die hard fan of the series, I still found the films entertaning and fun. I would expect the same from the the newest installment. I was not in the least disappointed. This film had exactly what I wanted in a summer movie. Intense action, great humor, and just an overall good time. Johnny Deep once again proves he is still at the top of his game as Jack Sparrow and Geoffery Rush gives a solid performance as Barbossa. I found the plot very understandable thanks to the fact that I watched the first three films in one weekend to understand the characters and story. This served me well in the end and helped me enjoy the film even more. As far as action, this is the best action I've seen in a Pirates film yet. The mermaid attack scene had me on the edge of my seat. I found my heart beating faster every second the scene went on. Seeing these beautiful women turn into flesh eating predators both startled and excited me. I also loved the chemistry that Johnny and Penélope Cruz showed on screen. Those two showed a connection that I've never seen before in any film I watched. They worked well together in the sensual points in the film as well as the comedic moments. This will bode well for them if they partake in more projects together down the road. I really loved Penélope's overall performance as well. I feel she brought a sexiness and spice to the series that I felt Keira Knightly lacked in the first three. Hopefully, this will not be her last stint as Angelica. One of the number one things I liked about the film was the fact it centered around Jack Sparrow and not Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner. Looking at the first three films, I felt that Will and Elizabeth were the center of the story despite Jack being the primary protaganist. They sort of took the spotlight off of him basically making Sparrow a third wheel which I felt wasn't fair to Johnny at all.
Johnny Deep and Penélope Cruz's on screen romance was
a true treat to watch. They made the relationship between
Jack and Angelica intensly hot and steamy in most moments
of the film.
The descion to make Jack the main focus of the film was a great concept. Giving Sparrow his own love intrest in Angelica and making him the center of the story really made me appreciate Deep's talents as he played the iconic pirate. Overall, this is a great summer film that satisfied me in everyway possible and gives me confidence in the films that come after it. Critics need to understand that summer is about fun and It's really hard to find a serious Oscar worthy film during this period. Lighten up and try to enjoy it or just stay home.

to charm and entertain the world for years to come.

2011 Summer Movie Season - Month 1 Preview (May 2011)

Zeros to Heroes: Mighty Avenger and Notorious Pirate Headline May's movie Line Up
By Brandon Porter

Hey Followers, The summer movie season has officially begun. The anticipation and excitement for this year's summer flicks has been outstanding. But after a record breaking box office performance from Fast Five, which raked in over $85 million dollars this past weekend, the bar has unexpectedly been raised for the films that follow it. These next few months will be particularly interesting after such a booming start. In this post, we will preview the headline films in the month of May. Paramount and Disney will be going at it this month as each studio dishes out their first strikes

After a brief stint as James T. Kirk's father in Star Trek,
australian actor Chris Hemsworth looks to solidify
himself among hollywood's elite as he
portrays the god of thunder and future avenger.
Thor (Paramount Pictures, May 6th)
Continuing the enormous line of live action superhero films, Thor looks the strike down the competition this year. Chris Hemsworth joins an all star cast which includes Anthony Hopkins as Asgard ruler, Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, and academy award winner Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, in the origin story of one of the Mighty members of the Avengers. Thor is the first of three superhero movies set to be realeased this summer and the first film realeased by Paramount in the summer movie season. As with other superhero films, the main blood that keeps the film strong is the fans of the series. Thor, if it wants to deliver a solid critical and box office performance, will have to present a strong script as well as a solid plot that is familiar to fans but easy to understand for audience members who don't follow the comics. Being that Fast Five had such a fantastic run, Thor will be looking for the same results when it's released in theaters and IMAX on May 6th.

Johnny Deep is back as Captian Jack along
with Penolope Cruz in the next chapter
 of the Pirates franchise.
Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Walt Disney Pictures, May 20th)

Mermaids, zombies, and Blackbeard..oh my!!! That's what you can expect to see Captian Jack Sparrow face in his latest adventure, Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It's not hard to see that this year's installment of the millon dollar Disney franchise is hands down one of the most anticipated movies of the summer. With the return of Johnny Deep as the notorious Jack Sparrow as well as a cast of new characters, On Stranger Tides looks to sink its competitors and make a splash at the box office. It's been over 4 years since the last Pirates movie hit theaters. After the brief hiatus, Disney is ready to hoist the sails for another fastastic adventure, this time to the legendary fountain of youth. Since 2003, the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise has joined the many other successful film series in recent memory which includes Harry Potter, 007, and Star Wars. Because of this, fans will be lining up to see their adventurous hero in the new film. One of the interesting set ups of On Stranger Tides is the shake up of the franchises' main cast. Even with actors Johnny Deep and Geoffery Rush returning for the fourth film, Disney has done away with series veterans Orlando Bloom and Keira Kinghtley and brought in new actors to portray the newly added characters. Such actors include Ian McShane as the legendary Blackbeard, Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard's daughter and Sparrow's old flame Angelica, Sam Claflin as young missionary Philip Swift, and in her first American role, spanish actress Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey as the mysterious mermaid Syrena. With the departure of Bloom and Knightley and the new cast of characters, Disney seems to want to move forward and begin a new story arc in the saga. We'll see how the new changes fair when Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides shoves off into theaters May 20th in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D.

Well that's all for now followers. Be on the look out for the reviews and analysis of these two films and the ones to come. See ya soon!!!

2011 Summer Movie Season - Fast Five: Review & Analysis

Furiously Out of The Gates!: Fast Five gets Summer Movie Season off to a blazing start!!!
     By:  Brandon Porter

Well followers, it's finally here!!! The 2011 Summer Movie Season  is officially on!!! Here is the reveiw of the season's tip off showcase: Fast Five.

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return behind the wheel
in the latest installment of the action franchise

The Story
About 2 years ago, covict Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) was sentenced to twenty five years to life in prison and it seemed like justice had finally caught up to him..or so he thought! With the help of his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) and his rival friend Brian o'Connor (Paul Walker). Dom once again escapes a life behind bars. Months pass and the trio is living in secret in Rio, Brazil. All seems well until a car jacking job goes bad and Brian and Dom are accused of the crime making the them the targets of the country's head dealer. Brian and Dom now must hatch one last scheme to insure their freedom and security. They inlist the help of their closest friends from back home consisting Brian's south beach buddies Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) as well as Dom's old running mate Han Lue (Sung Kang) and temptress Gisele Harabo (Gal Gadot). Their plan: retrieve the country's head drug dealer's multi million dollar fortune and disappear for good. But the plan gets thicker and  more riskier when the US hires the hard boiled DSS agent Luke Hobbs, (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who has a perfect track record of always getting his man, to hunt them down and bring them to justice. With the dealer's mob and the elite agent and his team breathing down their necks, Can Dom and the others successfully get the money or will this be their last ride?

Being that Dwanye Johnson is mostly known
for his work in action films in the past,
his role in Fast Five shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.
 Analysis
If you love action, gorgeous ladies, and fast cars , then you must know a Fast and The Furious film when you see one. The Fast and the Furious films have become one of the most successful film franchises in the past decade. Unfortunately, though the films do fairly well at the box office, it's where the films stand critcally that is one of the franchises main faults. Combined, the Fast and the Furious movies have averaged below fifty percent or lower with critics panning the films for lack of story, depth, and meaning. The same thankfully can not be said for the franchises latest installment, Fast Five. With the poor critical success of 2009's Fast & Furious, Director Justin Lin looked to come back strong in the next film. Glad to say, he succeded!!! Lin took the approch of more action but have a great story to back it up. The aspect worked well giving the audience a great action flick and a depth filled plotline. Because of this, Fast Five has now become the first finacially and critically successful installment in the franchise. Rotten Tomatoes awarded the film a score of 79%, the highest out of any of the previous four. The film was mainly praised for it's great summer film approch and the chemistry between the film's main cast. With a presumable sixth and seventh film in the works, Lin will have a solid rock to build on as he continues the high octane series.

Review
The Dodge Charger was heavily showcased
in the film especially in the intense climax.
And being that I like the car anyway,
this film just made me love it even more.

Being I had analyzed the whole summer movie season since mid-march, I had high expectations for the first film that would get it going. That is exactly what Fast Five did. When you really look at it, there really isn't a better film to get the summer movies started. What says summer more than beautiful females, bangin cars, and intense fast paced action. When I went to go see the movie, I had expectations that this would get me ready for what was to come in the coming months. I was not disappointed. Fast Five is everything I would want in a summer flick: Intense fast paced explosive action. Something  like that when it comes to movies is a real turn on. Justin Lin's overall set up of the film is one that fans of other film franchises only dream about. What other film series do you know reunites all the favorite characters from the past films and brings them together for the latest installment? Sometimes this idea dosen't always work out, but because of the amazing chemistry that the cast showed while filming, it was well worth the risk. The film takes off as all the other previous films before
<><>
If anything else, the brawl scene between
Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson
 should automatically
go down as Fight of The Year
it; then once the story take off, it creates an identity all it's own. The big time hiest approch of the film's plot is highly similar to other films such as Takers and Set it Off ; but with a more positive outcome. As I stated before, this seperates the movie from it's predecessors and makes it a unique experience. As far as action goes, it was just what I expected to see. The car scenes, especially the vault pulling sequence, were sights to behold. The big winner however had to be the intense fight scene between Dom and Agent Hobbs played by Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Watching that fight was like watching a clash of the titans without thunder and lightning but with vicious punches and hammer throws. Overall, this was an awesome movie that was well done and well played. I look forward to seeing how the other summer movies do.
