Hello Followers. Well yesterday, I gave you a brief overview of the big time films for the 2012 Summer Movie Season. Today, I'll give you a breakdown of the headline films for May 2012. As I analyzed the movies for this month, It is clear that this is definitely a great Opening Month. A-list actors Johnny Deep, Will Smith, and others kick off the summer movie season with potential blockbusters.
If the Miami Heat were a team of superheroes, they would probably look like this. |
Possibly the most anticipated film of 2012 besides The Hunger Games and The Dark Knight Rises, Marvel Studios is releasing The Avengers, The team of super powerful beings brought together to save earth from threats known and unknown. For fans who remember last year, two of Marvel Studios three films in the 2011 Summer Movie Season were Thor and Captian America: The First Avenger. This year, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth return as Thor and Steve Rodgers alongside Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawk Eye (Jeremy Renner), and Dr. Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to form a team of superheroes under the Avengers Intitive authorized by S.H.E.I.L.D director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Despite the fact that the film hasn't been released in the US yet, it has already gotten overwelmingly positive reviews from critics overseas which only excites us more. We'll see how this rag tag team of Marvel's finest come together when The Avengers assemble into theaters and IMAX 3D on May 4th.
Barnabas Collins and his 1972 descendant family. |
Dark Shadows (Warner Bros, May 11th)
Hell have no fury like a woman scorned. Or in Barnabas Collins' case, hell have no fury like a witch scorned. After breaking the heart of a jealous witch, Barnabas is cursed and turned into a hidious vampire and then buried alive. 200 years later, Barnabas is freed from his tomb and finds himself in the year 1972 which is very different from is home century of 1872. He comes home to find his estate inhabited by his descendants. They include the family matriarch (Michelle Pfeiffer), a rebellious and sarcastic humored teenager (Chloƫ Moretz), an innocent but lonely 10 year boy (Gulliver McGrath), the in-home psychiatrist (Helena Bonham Carter), and the drunk caretaker (Jackie Earle Haley). Barnabas tries to adjust to a new life in a new century filled with more advanced technology, loud music, and tiny songsteress that appear in electronic boxes. But things start to turn bad when Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), the witch that cursed Barnabas, returns to reclaim her beloved vampire hubby..by any means nessasary. On top of that, all the members of Barnabas' family are hiding dark and terrible secrets. Can Barnabas get his new family back in order while trying fend of a crazy and deranged witch? It is no surprise that Johnny Deep has teamed up with Tim Burton once more. This time, to recreate the classic soap opera from the 1960s. Deep is once again surrounded by a tremendous cast which include another Tim Burton vet Helena Bonham Carter and the ridiculosly talented Chloƫ Grace Moretz who is possibly the most sought after young actress beside Jennifer Lawrence. With comedic humor, stoner jokes, and scandolous escapades, Dark Shadows will look to be a summer hit when it reaches theaters on May 11th.
Battleship (Universal Pictures, May 18th)
The Regents reveal themselves to Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), Cora Raikes (Rihanna) and Beast (John Tui) |
The ocean. Peaceful, majestic, mysterious, and unexplored. A perfect place to hide!!! US Navy Officer Alex Hopper and his fellow crewmates aboard the USS John Paul Jones are in for the fight of their lives. After discovering a strange object above the water, they investagate and soon find themselves under seige from an alein race known as the Regents. Out gunned, out manned, and trapped within a force field, Alex, his crew mate and best friend Cora Raikes (Rihanna), and Vice Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson) must fight back the invaders and save their planet from immenent destruction. When I saw the teaser trailer for Battleship, I was kind of sceptical being that it was based on a board game (but probably because I stunk at playing it). But after watching the next two trailers, I came to the realization that this might be an awesome Sci-Fi action flick. This film looks to have everything you want in a summer film, fast paced high-octane action and of course, hot women!!! Being it's made from the company that gave the world Transformers, I have no dought I'll enjoy this movie all the same. We'll see if the film floats or sinks when Battleship hits theaters on May 18th.
Agent J (Will Smith) teams up with the younger version of his partner K (Josh Brolin) in the year 1969 |
Men In Black III (Columbia Pictures, May 25th)
After years as a member of the extraterrestrial peacekeeping organization, The Men in Black, Agent J (Will Smith) has been slimed, eaten, smacked by every alien scum you can think of. He has practically seen it all...or so he thinks. When a dark secret involving his partner K (Tommy Lee Jones) results in his disappearance, J must find the anwser to this mysterious turn of events. With an alien invasion taking place in present day New York, J will have to travel back in time to 1969 and team up with a younger version of K (Josh Brolin) to stop the invasion and save his partner's life. After ten years, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones put back on the black suits and shades again for the newest installment of the Men In Black franchise. With Men In Black II being an underwhelming experience for both fans and critics, Men In Black III can be the perfect oppurtunity to get the Sci-Fi comedy franchise back on track. With new aliens, new villians, and more insane antics, We'll see if Men In Black III will be a great experience or if a neuralyzer will be required afterwards when it comes to theaters Memorial Day weekend.
