Analysis

Upon news that the popular sci fi mutant ninja turtles franchise was to be rebooted, fans were both skeptical and curious to see how Hollywood would bring the turtles back to the big screen. That curiousness was met with fan outrage when it was announced that Michael Bay was to be involved in the reboot. After controversial storylines grabbed everyone’s attention including the casting of Megan Fox to the rumored aliens from outer space premise, it was clear that the rebooted franchise was on the wrong side of the anticipation line. Once released, the lack of a warm reception carried over into the opinions of critics and fans. Critics hammered the film with a horrid 19% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes despite a passable 64% fresh rating from critics. Despite being bashed by critics and fans, the film still grabbed top box office honors with a 65 million dollar total. Overall, the turtles may be back, but their welcome is far from warm.

The turtles take on Shredder

Review

Initially, I had no interest in watching the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But after a while, the film started to grow on me so I decided to give it a shot. In the end, I’m glad I did. The film is surprisingly good. It has a different vibe and look to it, but still harbors the light hearted fun that makes the turtles so lovable. In terms of the turtles themselves, they are the best thing about the film. All the turtles may look menacing and kind of scary, but once you get past the looks which I did pretty quickly, you realize these are accurate depictions of the pizza loving ninja heroes you know and love. Leo is grounded and loyal, Raph is hot headed and tough, Donnie is tech savvy and nerdy, and Mickey is..well…Mickey and in the best way possible. Pete Ploszek (with Johnny Knoxville providing the voice), Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, and Jeremy Howard do a great job in capturing these characters and bringing them to life. However I must say, Mickey is by far the film’s biggest bright spots. His outrageous gags and antics had me laughing out loud on several occasions. He is clearly the films scene stealer. Megan Fox is also surprisingly strong as April O’Neal. She caputures her spirit and fieriness quite well and I am very pleased with her performance even if others aren’t. The action in the movie is fast, fun, and fluid with memorable sequences like a great snow mountain chase scene and hard hitting martial arts action that young fans are sure to be practicing in their bedrooms for many nights to come. All in all, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turned out to be a pretty great time with plenty of laughs, action, and good all-around performances. That said, I actually wouldn’t mind if the heroes in a half shell made a return if the right improvements are made to make it even better.

Rating and Final Thoughts

Nice action, good performances, and great all around fun make this reboot of the ninja turtles franchise a surprise gem of the summer.

The turtles are back and they are having a good time along the way.

2014 Summer Movie Season - Get On Up: Review & Analysis

Get Down!!! Boseman Delivers Strong in James Brown Biopic!!!

By: Brandon Porter

Entertainer, Pioneer, Survivor, Legend. James Brown.

Story

Before he rose to fame as one of music’s most influential artist, James Joseph Brown, Jr (Chadwick Boseman) was a poverty riddled street kid from the south side of Augusta, Georgia. Abandoned by his mother and raised by his aunt, James’s determination, heart, and swagger helped him go from trouble maker to the immortal title of “Godfather of Soul!!!” This is his story.

Analysis

Get On Up served as the first biopic to tell the story of James Brown’s life. With Tate Taylor, director of the 2011 hit film The Help, directing and rising star Chadwick Boseman in the lead role. All signs pointed to a memorable on-screen tribute to Mr. Brown. In the end, the film did well. Despite opening #3 at the box office behind Lucy and Guardians of the Galaxy with a $14 million dollar opening weekend, the film was met with very positive reviews. The movie scored an admirable 77% certified fresh rating from critics and a 77% fresh rating from audiences. Fans and critics agree that this film solidly captures the spirit of one of music’s greatest artists.

James and Bobby Byrd show out in London

Review

As a fan of Chadwick Boseman and very aware of James Brown’s influence on modern music, I was eager to see how Tate Taylor was going to bring the story of James Brown to the big screen. After seeing the film, I was very satisfied with the finished product. Get On Up is a well told chronicling of Brown’s triumphs and tribulations. However, it doesn’t seem to have the type of dramatic punch that I expected from it. One reason for this is that the film seems to be all over the place. The story takes place in one time period then jumps to four different others. It was hard to stay invested in the story when it takes you on a straight zig zag. In terms of performances, their all solid Boseman is terrific as James Brown and captures the essence of the man we know. From the dancing to the demeanor, I could tell Boseman gave his all in prepping for his role. Other however seem to be quite underutilized. Others like Jill Scott, Craig Robinson, Tika Sumpter, and Octavia Spencer seem pushed to the side a bit. I understand this is James Brown’s story, but with a terrific collection of talent like this, It would have been nice to see them used more. All in all Get on Up is a very good film that brings on a new found respect for all he accomplished. One can only hope others take inspiration from his story and apply it to their own lives.

Rating and Final Thoughts

Behind Boseman’s electric performance, the biopic of James Brown is a well thought out and mainly well executed tribute to the godfather of soul.

The funk is in full effect as the audiences alike gain new found respect for one of music’s greatest entertainers

Analysis
Heading in, Guardians of the Galaxy didn’t have too many eyes on it being a lot of people were just familiar with the non-marvel films outside of The Avengers that focused on members of the team. However, given Marvel’s Studios recent success, people had faith that the film would deliver the same positive effect that the other Marvel films have. Thankfully, the film did just that. The film was met with positive reviews from both fans and critics. Guardians garnered a strong 92% Certified Fresh rating from critics and an even more positive 96% fresh rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Justin Lowe of The Hollywood Reporter praised the film by saying that it was "A well-matched ensemble rises to the challenge of launching a heroic origin film with distinctive style, abundant thrills and no shortage of humor." Reviewer Richard Roeper gave the film an A-, calling it "A fun, lighthearted confection that knows exactly what it wants to be and how to execute that mission. Financially, Starlord and company dominated the weekend box office with an outstanding $94,000,000 Million opening weekend easily grabbing the #1 spot. Guardians of the Galaxy also earned $11.2 million from Thursday night showings, surpassing Marvel’s prior film Captain America: The Winter Soldier's gross of $10.2 million for the biggest Thursday evening start for a movie in 2014. Guardians of the Galaxy is clearly another big hit with fans and critics. Now the countdown starts for Marvel’s next big ASSEMBLING in May 2015.

The Guardians and Ravagers defend
 Xandar from Ronan's Armada

Review
Over the course of the past two years, Marvel Studios has delivered some of the year’s best films. From the groundbreaking Avengers to the mind blowing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel is on a rocket to the top with no sign of slowing down. Their latest installment in their ever expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of The Galaxy, offers the studios’ first foray into films that focused on initial members of the Avengers. I was able to catch the film in IMAX 3D and I’m happy to report that the film is every bit as “MARVEL-ous” as expected. Guardians is a terrific sci-fi adventure that offers the same Marvel goodness but with a new spin. One thing I appreciated about this film is its tremendous balance. The thing I did not expect from the movie was it to start out so emotionally heavy. The opening scene was so gut wrenchingly emotional that I was almost in tears. That is an unexpected move by Marvel but one that is both bold and well executed. But from there, the film takes off with all the great action you come to expect from a movie with Marvel’s name on it. The action sequences were thrilling and spectacular especially the space fighter battle between the Ravagers and Ronan’s army above Xandar. It took me back to those space battles in Star Wars that I loved so much as a kid. Comedy is another thing the film does very well. Thanks to some great writing and well placed on screen antics, the film had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. In terms of acting, it’s great all around. Chris Pratt continues to impress me this year with his latest film. He keeps the film light hearted while also displaying great substance and depth as Starlord. Zoe Saldana is straight up bad ass as Gamora. No stranger to roles like this, she plays the character well and makes it her own. Bradley Cooper is a riot as Rocket but despite being wise cracking and abrasive, he has a tortured essence about him that makes him vulnerable and complex. Bautista does solidly as Drax and he gives what he has but he doesn’t have the same lasting impact as the other characters. Finally Groot, played by Vin Diesel, is hands down the most likable. He’s intimidating yes, but the guy is just so lovable and full of heart. He is clearly the glue guy that keeps the movie intact. Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is another Marvel knockout. It offers everything in a nice action packed, heartfelt, and repeatedly hilarious package. Can’t imagine what their gonna wow the world next.

Rating and Final Thoughts
Brimming with terrific action, heart, humor, emotion, adventure, and sci fi, Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the studios’ funniest and most complete films ever.

With Marvel Phase 2 officially in the books, Marvel Studios sets its sights to 2015 as it prepares to reassemble “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” in one of the most anticipated movies in recent memory.
