2016 Summer Movie Season - Suicide Squad: Review & Analysis

Bad Company!!!!  Latest DC Extended Universe Movie is Fast, Fun, and Flawed Action Fest!!!!

Review By Brandon Porter

Worst. Heroes. EVER!!!

Story Description

After the smoke has cleared following the ordeal in Metropolis and Gotham, the government is now aware of the potential of a new type of warfare that threatens the world. Looking to take the first steps to combat these dubbed "Metahumans", Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) proposes a risky but seemingly effective plan: recruit a task force of dangerous criminals who can stop a threat before it escalates. Led by Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), the group of inmates known as Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) embark on a do or die mission for the opportunity of a lifetime: reduced sentences and a chance at a fresh start. Time for a little Mayhem, mischief, and the rise of a legendary foe. Besides, they're bad guys, it's what they do.

Hello Puddin

Critical and Financial Analysis

Since the film was announced, Suicide Squad has garnered significant hype and anticipation. However, that hype has recently been accompanied by pressure to deliver thanks to the backlash and polarizing reception of BvS. Thought to be the "movie of the summer", Suicide Squad now not only is tasked with being the entertaining summer spectacle but the savior of this early faltering Extended Universe. Critically, the reception was none to kind. The film was hammered with negative reviews garnering an abysmal 26% via rotten tomatoes. Critics panned it for its choppy editing, muddled plot, and lack of character development among its great cast. The audience reception has been a little bit of the polar opposite with the audience reception being 73%. The reviews however could not stop the monstrous box office haul. The film nabbed an outstanding and record breaking total of $135.1 million. The box office performance beats the previous record held by Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy making the Suicide Squad the highest grossing August release. With bad reception from critics but a terrific box office performance, Suicide Squad has the financial power to be a big summer hit but not enough positive reception to be held up to its competition.

Gotta Have Fun On The Way To Work

Film Review

The start or the DC Extended Universe has been less than receptive. After the polarizing and controversial performance of BvS, Suicide Squad is now looked at as the last great hope for the summer movie season and the DCEU. After seeing the film in, I can conclude that Suicide Squad is possibly the most entertaining entry in the DCEU. The film is a polar opposite to Batman v Superman in terms of tone. While the film was dark and menacing in some aspects, there is a playful essence within the movie that been non existent in the previous entries of the extended universe. This dark humor fits the film well and is enhanced by the performance of the cast. Speaking of which, there are a number of standouts to take into account in terms of performance. Will Smith is terrific in the role as Deadshot. Despite being a straight badass, he has a driven sense of morale and motivation that adds heart to his character. Margot Robbie is absolutely fun to watch as Harley Quinn. From the moment she was cast in the role, I knew she was going to be one of the film's biggest bright spots. Robbie displays a Harley Quinn that is crazy, bubbly, violent, quirky, playful, flirty, and vulnerable. There are a variety of layers to her but Robbie pulls it off beautifully. The big surprise in terms of performance for me was Jay Hernandez as El Diablo. A passive and grounded character with a keen sense of self make him possibly the best character of the principal cast. His story is tragic and makes you sympathize with who he is and his choices. This also makes him the best developed character of the squad. A terrific performance all around. As for Jared Leto's joker, it unfortunately suffers but in a different way than expected. Leto gives his all in the role but his lack of presence dose not make him a viable standout in the film. Others like Viola Davis shine and do well with what they are given while others like Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Cara Delavigne fall by the way side. Action wise, the movie is a blast. Fast paced and raucous sequences are fun, lively, and full of spectacle. This is the best action I've seen this summer since Civil War. As for it's place in the DCEU, it does offer something that the other movie haven't and that is a sense of fun that has been severely needed with the dark doom and gloom that is becoming habit for the franchise. A number of kinks still need to be worked out but the film is proof that progress is being made. Overall, Suicide Squad is wildly fun but also wildly filled with bugs that continue to plague the growing extended universe. Greatness is found in the layers but there is still lots to be done before this cinematic collection of stories can stand among the giants.

Rating and Final Thoughts

The most fun and entertaining entry into the DC Extended Universe so far. The film gives the franchise something
that it's been missing but not enough to put it in the same realm of its competitors.

Though the progress is slow, this up and coming cinematic universe still
has the seeds to become a main stay franchise worthy of financial and
critical acclaim.

2016 Summer Movie Season - Month By Month Recaps

Summer Movie Season 2016 (Month 3 Recap)

Hello Followers, we are at the end of month 3 of the Summer Movie Season. This month has been jammed packed with great movies but all good things must come to an end as we are starting to get close to the conclusion of SMS 2016. Let's take a look back at the July films and how they did in month 3.

The Legend Of Tarzan

The new iteration of the story of the man raised by Apes was met with lackluster praise and an even more lackluster box office haul. Despite a great cast and decent performance from Skarsgard, The Legend of Tarzan just couldn't stack up the previous adaptations that came before it.

The BFG

Steven Spielberg's magical adaptation of the beloved children's book by Roald Dahl was imaginative, visually stunning, and heartfelt to a big extant. Great performances from the cast and a pure essence of magic and wonder made The BFG an entertaining but not quite satisfying adventure.

The Secret Life Of Pets

Universal and Illumiations' latest creation may have just become the next big animated franchise. A stellar voice cast, hilarious high jinks, and a heartfelt story thrust The Secret Life of Pets in the conversation as one of the best animated films of the year.

Ghostbusters

The reboot of the paranormal comedy was met with less than anticipation and more with controversy, hatred, and the onslaught of venomous sexist and misogynistic "fans" However, the film ended up being a decent and surprisingly rich comedy that was fun and action packed. A nice way to prove the haters wrong.

Star Trek Beyond

The third installment of the Star Trek revival brought the franchise back to its roots. Balancing the new school action with the old school soul of the original series made this on of the most authentic Star Trek films of the past decade. A beautiful way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Sci fi phenomenon.

.

Jason Bourne

The espionage thriller series saw the return of Matt Damon as the highly trained and deadly assassin. Filled with action, suspense, and a deeper dive into the mind of this trained weapon, Jason Bourne is a compelling an engaging action thriller that adds leverage and depth to the action franchise.
