Re-Porter Blog 2021 Summer Movie Season Preview

Happy Wednesday followers. It's hard to believe but we are now on the cusp of our first semi-functional summer movie season since the beginning of the pandemic. As you might have realized, the summer movie season preview is arriving a bit later than usual. Given that COVID-19 is still a recurring issue, the increase in fully vaccinated people is resulting in many businesses starting to open up to near full capacity. Don't get it twisted, this virus is still a huge issue but it nice to see some progress being made as we continue to fight our way out of this pandemic. With a lot of the theaters beginning to open back up, studios are prepping to welcome guests to the cineplex for a plethora of blockbusters that are sure to breathe much-needed life into the industry. The SMS may be pretty unorthodox this year, but the movies are big and packed with big stars and potentially big moments that will be a shot in the arm of an industry that looks to rise up to new heights. Let's get a rundown of the movies on the way to both the big and small screen this summer.

The end of May and all of June gets the season off the ground with several potential blockbusters that will set a precedent for the season. Emma Stone and Emily Blunt kick things off with the reimagining of one of  Disney's most sinister villains and the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2018 surprise hit respectively. Next, Lin Manuel-Miranda brings passion and pride in the film adaptation of his acclaimed broadway musical. Then, Pixar brings its latest animated feature to Disney + while Universal brings back the Fast Family in the next high octane chapter in the Fast and Furious franchise.

July ramps things big time with some heavy hitters. Two days prior to Independence Day, Universal presents the final chapter of one of the most provocative and politically on-the-nose horror thrillers of the past decade. On July 9th, the Marvel Cinematic Universe makes its long-awaited return to the big screen with the long-delayed and long-overdue solo outing featuring one of the OG Avengers. Midway through the month, LeBron James and Bugs Bunny squad up for a high stakes game of hoops in the new take on the 1996 sports animated comedy. Closing out July, one of the most beloved members of GI Joe gets the full spotlight in the first GI Joe cinematic film in 8 years while Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson go on an adventure into the unknown jungles for mysteries untouched until now.

August and September wind down the season with some pretty big films. DC delivers a revamped take on Task Force X in the James Gunn directed action epic. Ryan Reynolds sheds his NPC persona to be the hero he's always wanted to be and the legend of the hooked-handed apparition is reborn in Nia DeCosta's continuation of the 1990s horror classic. Finally, Marvel closes us out with the arrival of their newest hero in their first MCU feature with and predominately Asian cast.

There is a lot of great stuff on the menu of this cinematic buffet and I'm confident we will see all of them the way they were meant to be seen. Quite a bit is coming over the next several days starting with a special post on the state of the theater industry as well as the May/June preview. Looking forward to a fun-filled season. See you all tomorrow.
