Long time no see followers. We are nearly halfway through 2024 so you know what that means. The best time of the year for cinephiles is back again. It is a time of excitement but also one of reflection as well. I would be remiss if I failed to mention the circumstances that have transpired since last year’s season such as the SAG/AFTRA strike and the writer's strike. Especially because the aftermath has left this year’s summer movie season drastically different than it was originally. Despite all of that, there are still plenty of things to get excited about as we head into this year’s SMS. Let’s go over all of it in this year’s latest summer movie season preview.
The kick-off of SMS 2024 sees things dramatically different from year’s past with Marvel Studios not headlining week one (more on that later). That does not mean that May won’t deliver a strong opening. Ryan Gosling rides his momentum from Barbie into the starring role of a stuntman in way over his head in The Fall Guy. Shortly after, we witness the next chapter in the rebooted Planet of The Apes series which features new characters and a new timeline 3 centuries after the fall of Ceasar. In mid-May, John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds are on the job to save your childhood in IF. Closing out the month are stories featuring extraordinary women. Memorial Day weekend sees the origin of the legendary character from Mad Max Fury Road in Furiosa A Mad Max Saga. Then, Daisy Ridley steps into the suit as the courageous woman who defied expectations in The Young Woman and The Sea.
July will have no shortage of fireworks and after hearing this you’ll know why. July 4th weekend sees the return of Gru and family in Despicable Me 4. Afterwards, Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum try to pull of the ultimate intergalactic con job in Fly Me To The Moon. On July 19th, crank up Dorothy and hold on for your life as we brave the elements in Twisters. Finally, as I mentioned previously, Marvel Studios typically kicks off the season in the first week of May but that isn’t the case this year. It should also be noted that this Marvel Studios theatrical release is the only one for 2024. But rest assured, this one is special. July 26th will see the Merc with a Mouth return to cinemas but this time he’s brought a friend with him who is eager to bring a jolt of chaotic energy into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in one of the year’s most anticipated event films.
Finally, things come to a close in August heading into September with some intensely exciting films headlined. With video game adaptations seeing an uptick, Lionsgate looks to ride the wave and release the onscreen action adventure based on the 2K franchise Borderlands. Not long after, terror returns to the cold vastness of space in the latest edition to Ridley Scott’s bone-chilling sci-fi horror franchise Alien Romulus. Closing out this season will be the return of the show-stopping ghost with the most in the anticipated follow-up to the 1980s film Beetlejuice.
