2017 Summer Movie Season - Month By Month Recaps

Summer Movie Season 2017 (Month 1 Recap)

Hello Followers. The first month of the summer movie season has come to a close and it's amazing how fast it went by. As the June movies prepare to take center stage, let's breakdown the May films based on critical and financial impact.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

The anticipated sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy was met with great acclaim and mild criticism. While still a funny, thrilling, and emotionally strong sequel, it's impact wasn't felt as strongly as the first film. Despite that, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is still a terrific installment in the MCU and a strong way to kick off the summer season.

King Arthur Legend of the Sword

Guy Ritchie's rendition of King Arthur was ambitious but criticality flawed. A choppy and unevenly paced conundrum of flash with little substance, King Arthur Legend of the Sword is in a word  unworthy of the summer blockbuster mantle.

Alien Covenant

A more focused and action oriented than its predecessor Prometheus, Alien Covenant delivered in bloody action and tension filled suspense. While it was an improvement over the last film, it still didn't have the formula to stand out amongst the other films in the franchise. A good but less than perfect step forward for the sci fi horror series.

Everything Everything

Behind two very solid leads, Everything Everything brought a sweet and engaging love story that wasn't without it teen romance drama clichés but still gave a satisfying and stable summer romance.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales

The latest Pirates of the Caribbean film was a refreshing and much needed change in heading for a franchise sinking into obscurity. A larger scope and big scale action helped make this latest swashbuckling adventure the most entertaining and satisfying entry yet.

2017 Summer Movie Season - Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales: Review & Analysis

Staying Afloat!!!! Fifth Pirates Adventure Steers Franchise Back To Its Bigger and Grander Scale and Scope!!!!

Review By Brandon Porter

Jack Is Back!!!!

Story Description

Years ago, renowned Spanish Captain Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem), patrolled and cleansed the high seas of piracy with extreme prejudice and little mercy. But after a run in with a young and bright eyed boy named Jack Sparrow, he disappeared and has been presumed dead for decades. Now back with a deformed figure and a lust for revenge, a young boy (Brenton Thwaites ), a scientist (Kaya Scodalario), Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and Jack Sparrow (Johnny Deep) must race to find the legendary trident of poseidon which grants the holder ultimate control of the sea. The biggest and most daring adventure for Jack begins as his limits and resolve are put to the test in this epic and final adventure of the Legendary Pirate Captain.

Bitter Rivals And Friends To The End

Critical and Financial Analysis

Since it's inception, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is one of the most iconic franchises for Disney and Hollywood. It's large scale adventure, scope, and humor make the series stand out amongst the many franchises that came before it. The newest addition to the series see the return of not only Jack Sparrow but other iconic characters in the most ambitious pirates adventure yet. Financially, the film performed at expected expectations. The film garnered $62.2 million at the domestic box office with an additional $208.4 million oversees for a $270.6 million dollar worldwide gross. Critically, the film was less than impressive among critics. The film scored a less than satisfactory critical score of 32% via Rotten Tomatoes while audiences were more gracious giving the film a solid 77% fresh rating. While critics seem to have turned their backs on the franchise, the fan base that was established from the jump have given an incredible sign of gratitude to the supposed final chapter to this iconic character and this game changing franchise.

You find the most unorthodox things in the water.

Film Review

6 years have past since Pirates of the Caribbean last sailed into theaters. The landscape of the summer movie season may have changed drastically but the passion for this series and it's iconic character is still strong as it was in July 2003. The latest installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, looks to return the franchise to its roots to deliver a fitting alleged conclusion to the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. After witnessing the film in IMAX, Dead Men Tell No Tales is a return to form for this once big and ambitious franchise. Since the first installment, the Pirates film have grown in size in regards to action, scale, and budget. The previous installment, On Stranger Tides, proved to be a massive step backwards for the series for it felt like a majorly smaller film in terms of scope and scale. Dead Men Tell No Tales returns the series to a sense of largeness and fun that was lacking in the film prior. For the acting, Johnny Deep returns to his most iconic character delivering let's be honest, Jack Sparrow. By now we are familiar with this character's personality, antics, and mannerisms. Though it might be becoming tiresome for some, there is a charm and appeal to this character that keeps us wanting to come back. As for the newcomers, Kaya Scodalario and Brenton Thwaites are solid in the role with a balanced dynamic that is both likable and fun to watch. Kaya Scodalario's performance is the standout amongst the two. She delivers a smart, head strong, and driven female character. Javier Bardem is a bit of a missed opportunity with Captain Salazar. Though not as wasteful as Ian McShane's Blackbeard, Salazar isn't given enough of a stage to really shine and make his mark. It also doesn't help he trying to live up to iconic villains like Barbossa and Davy Jones. Speaking of Barbossa, Jeffery Rush shows us a new side of the character delivering a more vulnerable version of the once iconic villain. His arc is brought to a satisfying close and serves as a fond farewell to one of the best characters in the franchise. Action wise, the film is incredibly entertaining. The movie's scope and scale return to larger form resulting in fun and fast paced incursions that have plenty of entertainment value for long time fans. A complete 180 to the smaller scale 4th instalment, this installment feels bigger and as a result equal a much more memorable experience. Overall, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales is more or less a return to form for the series. With larger scale action returning as well as the larger scope, the fifth instalment proves to have steered the series in a more positive if not less scrutinized direction.

Rating and Final Thoughts
A bigger and more larger scale adventure benefits this latest entry in the blockbuster franchise steering back into less murky waters.

A toast to another crazy adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow

2017 Summer Movie Season - Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Review & Analysis

'

Galaxy's Finest!!!! Marvel Scores With Deeply Emotional and Entertaining Guardians Sequel!!!!

Review By Brandon Porter

The galaxy isn't gonna save itself

Story Description

Following the heroic endeavor on the planet Xandar, Peter Jason Quill aka Starlord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Batista), Rocket and Groot  (Bradley Cooper & Vin Diesel) have been steadily adjusting to life as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Months have past and a new adventure awaits as well as new enemies that threaten the existence of the cosmos. Now faced with a larger threat than before, Starlord and the others will go up against enemies new and old in a Intergalactic showdown that will shake the cosmic realm to its core. Besides, anyone can save the Galaxy....once.

Peter Reunited With His Long Lost Father

Critical and Financial Analysis

Hailed as on of the most anticipated films of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 had a substantial amount of hype around it. Reuniting fans with beloved chracters and settings, Guardians was poised for greatness right from the jump. When the film was finally released, it soared to heights like a MCU movie should.  The film conjured up an impressive $145 million domestically with an additional  $282.6 million overseas for a $427.6 million worldwide haul. Critically, the scored a solid but surprisingly low critical score of 81% certified fresh via rotten tomatoes which is a 10% drop off from the previously film while it scored a more positive score from the audience who awarded it a strong 90%. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 looks to have delivered a great second chapter and another awesome installment into the MCU. Some see it as a great sequel while others see it as a letdown compared to the first one. Despite the different opinions, GOTG Vol 2 kicks off the SMS in explosive fashion.

That looks like fun....

Film Review

As one of the most anticipated films of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 was no question at the top of my must see list. As a fan of the surprisingly spectacular first film, I was eager to see how the second installment would build on that momentum as well as standout amongst the most recent MCU installments since than. Finally, after seeing the movie, I can conclude that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is a terrific second adventure of the cosmic heroes. The movie had a lot of eyes and expectations on it after the first film became such a surprise cultural sensation. Vol 2 offers all the things that made the first such a hit while delivering a plethora of things necessary to be a great sequel. The original team all come back and delver in their second go around as the characters. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista are solid in their sophomore efforts while Baby Groot and Rocket are the true standouts among the principal cast. One of my biggest positives of the film are the development of two characters. One of whom being Yondu. He was a favorite of mine in the first film and he is developed wonderfully in this second film. You learn more about his past and his story arc in this film quite honestly makes him arguably one of the best characters in the MCU. Nebula has her share of development as well offering more layers to the character not seen in the first movie. As for the new additions, Pom Klamentiff is a welcome addition to the MCU. Her innocent personality and presence make for a promising start for the character's journey. The film does have plenty of entertainment value such as hilarious dialogue and fun action sequences but the film's emotion meter, which is cranked up compared to the first film, is the real standout element of the movie. The first film had its share of heart tugging moments but Volume 2 offers even more emotional firepower creating a moving final act that really delivers. In the end, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 did everything it was supposed to do to be a better sequel. Though it doesn't have that mantle of being the best film in Marvel Phase 3, it stands out in more ways than one to really shine amongst its cinematic brethren.

Rating and Final Thoughts

A emotionally superior second chapter that still offers the same fun, hilarity, and charm that has defined
these cosmic defenders of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Nothing like a sweet and delicious treat to kick start your summer season.

2017 Summer Movie Season: Pre Release Special For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

HOW'S IT GOING FOLLOWERS!!!! As most of you know, tonight is the official opening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Anticipation has steadily been built for the film and now we're ready to see these lovable characters back on the big screen!!! Before we join Starlord and the crew on their next adventure, let's take a look back at where we saw them last and where they are when we see them tonight.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

Once a lonely kid from Earth mourning the death of his mother, Peter Jason Quill aka Starlord rose to the occasion becoming part of something bigger by putting the needs of others above himself. Still cocky, sarcastic, and at times condescending. Starlord has the skills, charm, and wit needed to be an efficient Galactic defender.

Where We'll See Him Next

Since saving Xandar from Ronan, Peter finds himself taking on more responsibility weather he wants to or not over the team and the world around him. He looks to continue to build his reputation (and ego) to truly become an Intergalactic legend.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

A highly skilled assassin and the adopted daughter of the mad titan Thanos, Gamora is a versatile in both combat and in matching wits with her fellow Guardians. A target among those who despise her adopted parent, Gamora finds a place of comfort around misfits trying to find their way in the universe as well.

Where We'll See Her Next

Since the battle of Xandar, Gamora has begun to form a new life with her friends as she looks to carve her own path and find her own voice.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

A loud and easily triggered loose cannon, Drax saw to avenge the death of his family who were slain at the hands of Ronan. After putting his faith in others, Drax has found a way to honor the ones he's lost by being a friend and loyal ally to his fellow companions.

Where We'll See Him Next

Settling in with his new family, Drax continues to try and be a supportive and uplifting teammate.  Unfortunately, his hard deadpan personality still makes it hard for him to be encouraging without coming off as insulting.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

Two petty thugs who do more together than apart, Rocket and Groot are a formidable tag team and a valuable asset to the crew. After Groot's heroic sacrifice, Rocket began to appreciate him more as he transitioned into a smaller version of his once larger than life friend.

Where We'll See Them Next

Months after their last endeavor, Rocket finds himself as the parental figure looking after Groot and taking him under his wing. Although, the issue of Groot speaking only a few words still is a huge road block that is constantly been an obstacle.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

Once Ronan's right hand henchmen, Nebula had the skills and ferocity to match Gamora in the Battle of Xandar. After the battle, she fled to the far reaches of space plotting her revenge on Gamora and her team.

Where We'll See Her Next

With a new arm and a rejuvenated resolve, Nebula returns to reign havoc on anyone in her path and make a name for herself throughout the cosmos.

In Guardians on the Galaxy

Peter Quill's old mentor and handler, Yondu was the no nonsense leader of the Ravagers who "picked up" Quill when he was a boy. After Ronan's attack on Xandar, Yondu ordered Peter to give up the orb that contained one of the six Infinity stones. Only to be back handed yet again with only a troll doll.

Where We'll See Him Next

Months later, Yondu is up to his old tricks again causing trouble with his crew and hoping for a run in with Starlord and Company for some much needed payback.
