Critical and Financial Analysis

The teenage mutant ninja turtles are a beloved property that has gained new relevance in the current decade. With a hit TV show and a blockbuster film franchise on the rise, the heroes in a half shell are becoming a global phenomenon for a new generation. The sequel to the surprise hit of 2014 brings the Turtles back along with a handful of beloved fan favorites. From a critical standpoint, the film took a massive beating. Out the Shadows scored an abysmal 34% from critics via rotten tomatoes while scoring a more favorable 65% fresh rating from audiences. Financially, the movie earned a noble $12.5 million dollars at the box office following a less than impressive $2 million at early Thursday screenings. Though still early, the new film seems to be on pace for the #1 spot at the box office continuing the on screen relevance of the shell shocked pizza kings.

The turtles take on the Krang above the city of Manhattan.

Film Review

Despite skepticism early on, I witnessed the 2014 reboot of the TMNT franchise. Despite low expectations, the film impressed me with its humor and great representation of the characters. Out of The Shadows sees the return of the brothers as well as the anticipated on screen debuts of fan favorites Casey Jones and the troublesome duo Bebop and Rockstedy. After seeing the film in IMAX 3D, I can conclude that the movie is an all out blast and a leaps and bounds improvement of the first. Out of The Shadows captures the true essence of what the ninja turtles brand represents...FUN!!! To start, the action in the film is explosive from start to finish. From the highway chase sequence to the skydiving in brazil scene, the action is fast, fun, and a blast to watch. The film also features vast improvements in terms of characters. In the case of the turtles, they are much more present than in the first movie which is a huge plus. In addition to that, there is true friction within the group particularly when it comes to the reality of who they are and how the world will see them if they reveal themselves. These make for some surprisingly emotional levity I didn't expect to see. But aside from the turtles, the new characters are all fun and are brought to life wonderfully by the actors. Stephen Amell shines as the mask wearing bad boy Casey Jones. Playing a known fan favorite in the series, Amell pulls it off nicely as was a true bright spot in the film. Shamus and Gary Anthony Williams are a riot as Bebop and Rocksteady. Both actors are spot on with their characters delivering great gags and fun moments throughout. Brian Tee's much more true version of Shredder and Tyler Perry's quirky and nerdy Baxter Stockman were also welcome additions to the film. The film itself is, in my eyes, what a ninja turtles movie should be. The movie had a near perfect blend of action, adventure, and great humor which is what makes the turtles such a lovable property. The film's much more light hearted tone really helped make the film a more enjoyable experience than its predecessor because it represents everything that makes the series great. Overall, TMNT Out of The Shadows is not only a vast step up from its prior installment, but it is quite possibly one of the most fun and true to form ninja turtles experiences out there. From the characters, the action, and the boat loads of great humor, the movie is a treat for all those who love the heroes in a half shell.

Rating and Final Thoughts
A Terrific Balance of Action, Adventure, and Humor make TMNT Out of The Shadows one of the most
