Re-Porter Blog: 2015 Year End Post

Happy New Year’s Eve followers!!! We are officially down to the very last hours of 2015. I must say, this year in movies has got to be one of the best of the current decade. With so many amazing films that people are still talking about today, 2015 has been a cinematic blockbuster in itself. As we close the curtain on 2015 and prep ourselves for the exciting films set to be released in 2016, let’s close this year out by giving you my top takeaways for this year in addition to my top 5 films for the year.

Year End Takeaways for 2015

I don’t believe there has been a year this decade that has accumulated this much financial strength. Between Universal Pictures’ Furious 7, Minions, & Jurassic World and Disney owned Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the box office experienced a historic and record breaking year with several movies accumulating more than a combined $11 billion dollars worldwide. This total is the largest overall box office haul in movie history. Great to see the industry get such a monumental surge.

Over the course of this year, a number of films spelled the end of an era while also establishing their place among Hollywood’s greatest. The Fast and Furious franchise established its place as one of the most entertaining and culturally diverse action franchises while also bidding a tearful and heartfelt goodbye to a loved fallen cast mate. Katniss Everdeen hung up her wings in the final installment of the influential and culturally relevant Hunger Games franchise, and Daniel Craig had his supposed final mission as agent 007 in Spectre. With moments and characters we will never forget, these franchises and all involved have become part of an exclusive club that features some of the greatest cinematic achievements in movie history.

With all the hype and excitement surrounding the 2015 lineup, there were unfortunately a number of films that failed to live up to expectations. Despite great promise prior to release, Warner Bros’ attempt at a sci-fi space opera, Jupiter Ascending, became its own worst enemy and underwhelmed and underperformed at the cinemas. In the young adult adaptation category, The Divergent Series Insurgent repeated its mistakes of the past by disregarding the source material and destroyed any chance of it being the “next hunger games” despite being an improvement of the first. Additionally, the second installment of the Maze Runner franchise “lost its footing” and delivered an entertaining yet inaccurate depiction of the second novel after a very promising initial installment. But even more underwhelming especially since it was arguably the second most anticipated film next to Star Wars, Age of Ultron was a solid second installment yet failed to meet the high expectations of its very devoted fan base. With so many great films, there are always a few who come up short in terms of acclaim. Oh well, better luck next time.

This year also saw the return of classic franchises and studios that dished out some of the most beloved films of 2015. Sylvester Stallone returned to the ring as Rocky Balboa serving as the guide for the son of his greatest rival in the heart stopping and triumphant boxing film Creed. Pixar Animation Studios returned to its former glory delivering the hilarious and “emotional” masterpiece Inside Out. Despite the overwhelming hype and expectations surrounding the most anticipated film of 2015, fans returned to that galaxy far far away and witnessed the new awakening and the beginning of a new galactic era in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. With so much emotion and happiness with the return of these great franchises and studios, a new chapter begins and all fans and moviegoers are itching to be along for the ride.

Before I share my top 5, I wanted to share with you my runner up choices that didn’t quite make the cut but still were some of my favorites from this year.

Runner Up Favorites of 2015

Of all the films that you think would be a sleeper hit for 2015, Ant-Man probably wasn’t on your list. As the closer to Marvel phase 2, the studios’ heist film proved to be one of the most unique and fun superhero movies of 2015. With news of the character’s involvement in future Marvel projects including the much anticipated Captain America: Civil War and a sequel featuring a new partner, Ant-Man stands tall as he prepares for a very promising and thrilling future.

Stranded, alone, with little resources and options, the powerfully acted and directed sci-fi film from Ridley Scott is one of the true standout films of 2015. Personally, the film features an incredible cast that deliver amazingly in the roles they are given resulting in one of the best ensemble performances in recent memory. An Oscar nomination can be far off for this film next year.

As the sequel one of the most underrated films from last year, I had high expectations for the next chapter in the Maze Runner series. Despite making the costly mistake of not respecting the source material as much as its predecessor, the film did manage to deliver a thrilling and engaging second chapter that is just as action-packed and emotional as its book counterpart. With the third and final chapter not hitting theaters until 2017, Director Wes Ball has plenty of time to make adjustments and end this wild card among young adult franchises on a high note.

Supposedly serving as Daniel Craig’s final bow as MI6 agent 007, Spectre delivered an all-out spectacle that celebrated the legacy of an actor who brought so much to the character. With another Bond film set to be released at a later date, the question remains whether Craig will truly leave the character behind or will he return to don the tuxedo once more.

Despite the skepticism and fear prior to release, Jurassic World proved to be a sequel that fans of the prehistoric sci-fi franchise can be proud to take ownership of. Not to mention the fact that the film ended up being one of the most financially dominant films of the year. I for one am happy with how this film turned out and look forward to seeing what the next films have in store.

And now without further delay, Here are my top 5 favorite films for the year 2015

Top 5

Pick #1

The Major "Emotion" Picture
For the past couple of years, Pixar Animation Studios has seemed to have lost its touch releasing films that range from bad to passable. That all changed this year with the release of the brilliantly crafted and visually gorgeous Inside Out. A film that is nothing short of hilariously smart and thematically emotional, Inside Out is right up there among some of the best Pixar Animation Studios films such as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up. Stellar voice performances from Amy Poehler, Richard Kind, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, and Phyllis Smith along with visually arresting imagery make this film an absolute “Joy” to watch.

Fighting Strong
Emotional, powerful, and full of heart, adrenaline and hope, the spin-off sequel to the Rocky franchise has become one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed films of the year. Outstanding performances from leads Michael B Jordan and Sylvester Stallone in addition to terrific directing and great boxing action, Creed is one of the best boxing films of this year and I believe a true contender for this upcoming award season. Win or lose, Creed is one the true champs of the 2015 calendar year.

Pick #3

The Fire Burns Forever
Rarely does a franchise come along and have such a profound impact on society while also serving as a window to world we live in today. The final installment of the story of Katniss Everdeen cemented the legacy of one of the most socially conscious and influential franchises of this generation. Delivering one of the most emotional installments in the series, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 is a testament to what this series set out to accomplish since the beginning the start of the franchise 3 years ago. The story of the girl who went from brave tribute to a symbol of freedom will be remembered for years to come.

Pick #4

For Paul...
If you thought that Universal’s raucous action franchise could not get more incredibly crazy and thrilling, you obviously have been underestimating Vin Diesel and company. Delivering some of the year’s most jaw dropping and death-defying action sequences while also serving as a heartfelt farewell to the late Paul Walker, Furious 7 delivered one of the most over the top and all out entertaining films of the year. Paul Walker is looking down smiling as the fast family achieved one of the most financially successful box office hauls of the year and established the Fast and Furious series as one of the greatest action franchises in cinema.

Pick #5

A FORCEful Awakening

Ten years ago, if you said that there was going to be a new Star Wars movie coming out, people would look at you crazy. Well ten years later, a new chapter in the Star Wars saga has been released and has become the global phenomenon of a generation and in my eyes, one of the most entertaining films of the year. Rarely does a film come in with so much hype and expectations yet still manages to meet and maybe even exceed them. From my point of view, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is an example of a film that makes so many promises yet still manages to fulfil the majority of them all. With the tone and feel of the classics, the fast paced action of the prequels, one of the strongest new female heroines in the franchise, and an overall terrific sense of fun and excitement, The Force Awakens begins a promising new era for Star Wars that will captivate an entire generation of newly devoted fans. The force has awakened and it has never been stronger.

2015 has been an absolute blast that moviegoers and I won’t surly forget. But now, all signs are pointing to the plethora of must see films that are waiting to be experienced in the New Year. With that said, be sure come back tomorrow as we look ahead to what lies in store for us on the big screen in 2016. Have a safe New Year’s Eve followers!!!!

Re-Porter Blog: Star Wars: A Forceful Awakening Part 4

This installment of Star Wars: A FORCEful Awakening is being dedicated in loving memory to fellow Star Wars fan Daniel Fleetwood. Daniel, who passed away a few months ago after losing his battle with cancer,  fought hard through the end and was ultimately gifted with an advanced unedited screening of Star Wars:The Force Awakens prior to his passing. His spirit will be with every fan who sees the movie this weekend. RIP Daniel. The force will be with you, Always.

This ones for YOU!!!!!

A Forceful Celebration

Upon seeing the first teaser trailer in November of 2014, the annual Star Wars convention held in Anaheim, California was arguably a lot more anticipated than originally thought. Not only was the majority of the cast set to appear, but the first official trailer for the film was announced to debut.

But that wasn't the only big thing that happened at Celebration. Midway through the panel, a special guest appeared on stage and lead to an obsession of this unique and adorable character.

But of course, the biggest moment came at the end of the panel when the trailer was finally shown to the thousands of fans and well....just see for yourself.

As you can see, fans were livid with excitement as the emotional trailer officially signified the return of Star Wars. Amazing we are now at the point where we are about to experience the film. Crazy how time flies.

Comic-Kaze

About 3 months later, Star Wars made waves again by making its return to the annual super bowl of pop culture, San Diego Comic Con. Fans showed up in droves to get a potential encore of Celebration. They stood outside in line for days looking to get into Hall H.

The wait was made even more sweet when Kathleen Kennedy and JJ Abrams got ALL the fans in line donuts.

Once inside, fans were treated to a plethora of surprises including an appearance from one of the thousands of practical effect creatures

Happy Force Friday

September 4th was the next big fan blowout as Disney and various stores around the world participated in Force Friday. Numerous stores sold thousands of Star Wars merchandise to celebrate the release of the new film. Some fans walked away with a handful of goodies while others literally cleaned the stores out.

Force Friday Preview

Not to be left out of the fun, stars Daisy Ridley and John Boyega attended the Force Friday event in London and were plenty excited to get their hands on their character's toys.

John and Daisy During Force Friday

Force Friday was a financial fire storm just months before the film's release with fans young and old indulging in various collections of merchandise. But one toy in particular stole the show and was the hot item all week. Wanna take a guess what it was?

Yep!!! Can't say I'm Surprised.

Just Let It In

The NFL's Monday Night Football matchup between the NY Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles had a pretty good amount of hype around it but not in the way you think. Fans stuck through the entire first half of the game just to see the long awaited final trailer for the film. The trailer was met with monumental acclaim and emotion as fans appetite for the film grew larger.

Live Fan Reaction At Downtown Disney

In addition to the trailer, that day also marked the official launch of advanced tickets to the public. Numerous records were broken including an incredible $6.5 million in IMAX presales. As of today, The Force Awakens has reached over $100 million in pre ticket sales. While some fans got their tickets the day they came out, others found it difficult. As a result of the high demand, serveral ticket sites including Fandango, Movie Tickets.com, and IMAX.com crashed due to overwhelming traffic flow.

Report of Ticket Sales

With records broken and an emotional trailer, Star Wars fans could hardly wait for the release of the movie. The force was strong that month and has clearly carried over to today.

Now that we have highlighted your best moments, Time to get you guys ready for the movie. Here are some tips you need to know to have a successful opening weekend:

Tip 1

Get To Your Stations!!!

For those seeing the movie tonight, there is a good chance there are already fans lining up. Try and get there as early as you can to avoid missing out on the best seats.

Tip 2

Suit Up!!!

If you're one of the millions of Force Friday mega shoppers, you already have an incredible assortment of shirts for the movie. Come decked in your best Star Wars outfit and show your pride. (But be aware that a good amount of theaters are banning mask, helmets, blasters, and lightsabers. Respect their wishes and don't cause any problems with the theater)

Tip 2

Jar Jar Binge!!!

I know the title of this next tip makes you wanna log off but bare with me. If you wanna have the previous films fresh in your mind when seeing the next one, try to watch all of the films prior to seeing it to get even more hyped for the next installment. My advice would be to just watch Episodes 4-6.

Tip 4

NO SPOILERS!!!

I don't think I have to elaborate on how vital this is!!!! If you have been on the internet in the past week, we have thousands of fans urging everyone to not spoil the movie. Some even going as far as to saying don't even talk about it when your leaving the theater. JJ Abrams has stated he wants fans to go into the movie completely spoiler free. But of course, this is the internet and trolls will be licking their chops to try and ruin the most anticipated movie of the decade for fans hungry to see it. Probably a good idea to avoid the internet as much as possible if you can.

And remember, Some fans aren't afraid of doing this to people who spoil the movie.

You've been warned.

Tip 5

All Wings Report In!!!

Nothing better than seeing Star Wars than with the people you love. Grab you kids, your wife, your girlfriend, and best buddies and make it the best night ever.

And finally...  Tip 6...

WATCH AND ENJOY!!!!

This is something that none of us thought would happen. But we have been blessed with another Star Wars movie. Enjoy every bit of it and cherish this day for it is one that will be long remembered.

Well guys, that concludes my four part Star Wars special. Thank you for taking the time to visit as we get set for the release of the movie. To those seeing it tonight or during the weekend: have fun, be safe, and remember..

I leave you now with the final trailer for the film. Have a great and FORCEFUL weekend.

Re-Porter Blog: Star Wars: A Forceful Awakening Part 3

Happy Hump Day Followers and welcome back for Part 3 Star Wars A FORCEful Awakening. In this post, we're going to highlight the newest additions to the Star Wars universe as they prepare to make their debuts in The Force Awakens. Talented vets and relative unknowns headline this highly anticipated film and in all honesty, they might be just as excited as everyone else. Let's get to know the newest heroes of a galaxy far far away.

Actor Introduction

Beautiful, brimming with raw talent, and a mega watt smile that lights up a room, 23 year old Daisy Ridley comes in as the brave, lonely, and resourceful scavenger Rey. Ridley has a quality about her that makes her really standout which makes it even more surprising that Star Wars is her first big mega Hollywood film. Ridley's bright personality and lovable off screen charm has already made her a hit with a multitude of fans. As she joins the collection and growing list of strong female characters in Star Wars, one can hope Ridley can make her mark not only in this film, but in any other film she becomes involved in.

Previous Work

As I said before, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Daisy Ridley's first big movie. That doesn't mean that she hasn't had her share of on screen opportunities. A year ago, she stared in a gripping 5 minute short film named Blue Season as well as guest appearances on UK TV shows like Casualty. She can also be seen in the upcoming horror movie Scrawl due out in theaters soon. Pretty sure you'll see more of her if she knocks it out of the park as Rey.

Connection To Star Wars

Daisy has made it apparent of how much she LOVES star wars. If you see her Instagram account she has videos and pictures displaying her undeniable passion for this franchise. She constantly say she gave her all in this film and I personally cannot wait to see her on screen.

Actor Introduction

Quietly making a name for himself among the young crop of Hollywood newcomers, John Boyega has proven time and time again that he is a FORCE to be reckoned with. Already establishing himself as one of the best young black actors in the industry, Boyega's potential star power got a huge boost thanks to his role as reformed storm trooper Finn in The Force Awakens. Oozing with confidence, swagger, humbleness, and a personality and charm that is irresistible, Boyega has his sights set on superstardom while keeping his faith and family top priorities in his life

Previous Work

Even though Star Wars will be the first time the world will be able to see John Boyega, the actor has already gained a faithful following thanks to his work prior. In 2011, Boyega starred in the acclaimed sci-fi horror movie Attack The Block playing the character Moses. His performance drew significant praise and put him on a lot of casting director radars. He also has had stints in other films such as Imperial Dreams and the TV movie My Murder.

Connection To Star Wars

If you've seen any interview footage of John Boyega recently, you should already know that this guy is a mega huge Star Wars fan. In fact, I want to say he's one of the biggest SW geeks I've seen. Whether playing with a light saber in his house or having Harrison Ford sign his Han Solo doll (correction: action figure), John is truly living the dream and is as excited to be in the film as we are to see it. But in case you're not convinced, maybe the videos below will help reaffirm this fact...

Check out John's reaction to the trailer this past October

And you thought YOU had a problem with going overboard buying star wars stuff

Actor Introduction

A talented veteran actor with a resume that includes numerous award winning films, Oscar Isaac steps into the cockpit as X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The versatile and well rounded actor from Guatemala steps into the role of ace pilot much like a certain farmboy from a distant outer rim planet, Isaac brings his talent to the table adding a polished background and years worth of experience to a talented but young group of actors.

Previous Work

Oscar Isaac's film background is both extensive and impressive. Isaac has been part of some very serious roles that have earned him mountains of praise and awards. With roles in films such as Inside Llewyn Davis, A Most Violent Year, Sucker Punch, and this year's sci fi sleeper hit Ex Machina (which also stared fellow Force Awakens actor Dormhall Gleeson), Isaac has a talented background that clearly makes him qualified for any role he's offered. He can also be seen in next years anticipated superhero movie X-Men Apocalypse.

Connection To Star Wars

Oscar's connection to Star Wars is in large part due to his family. He has stated many times that it is because of his families passion for the series that he has taken the importance and significance of this role to heart. Plus, it's good to know a family member who has rubbed elbows with Harrison Ford.

Here is Oscar talking about his Uncle and how he got a role in the movie

As you can see, this talented and diverse group of actors are a promising trio that will help bring in the new era of Star Wars. The force is strong with them and I'm sure we'll be enjoying them in the movie and in future films for years to come.

Next Time on A FORCEful Awakening:

The final installment of A FORCEful Awakening is all about the FANS!!! We'll highlight some of your best moments during pre-release plus give you tips on how to survive opening weekend.

We're almost 24 hours away SW fans!!! Check back tomorrow as we get set for the force to awaken. Can You Feel IT?!!!
