Critical and Financial Analysis

No franchise wears its devoid of logic or physics-defying badge prouder that the Fast and Furious franchise. Now having built a reputation as pure over the top popcorn action, the franchises first-ever spinoff puts Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham front and center in what looks to be the summer's most bonkers summer blockbuster. To start, the film is doing quite well from a critical point of view. The film holds an above-average fresh rating of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences being more favorable with an outstanding score of 90%. Praise was thrown toward Johnson and Statham for their chemistry and for the action sequences as well. As for the box office, it left the competition square in the dust. The movie had a massive opening weekend total of $180 million making it the seventh highest-grossing film in the franchise. The film brought in $60.8 million domestic with an international total of $120 million proving once again the franchises international appeal and staying power. In what seems to be another hit installment in Universal's action franchise, the Fast and Furious brand is showing no signs of slowing down heading into their latest installment in 2020.

A Truckful of Thrills
Film Review

I have to say that out of all the franchises I have experienced, the Fast and the Furious franchise is by far the most intriguing and entertaining one I've seen in years. The characters, the cars, and the ridiculous action make this a sure-fire good time every time I step in the theater. The series takes a unique approach this time around choosing to implement a spinoff featuring fan-favorite Luke Hobbs and foe turned ally, Deckard Shaw. With a strong cast and the promise of maintaining the series' over the top action formula, Director David Leitch, Dwyane Johnson, and Jason Statham aim to deliver a real summer showstopper. After watching the film in its entirety, I can say the film is a welcome change for the franchise. The Fast and Furious franchise has made its mark in Hollywood with their over the top action and fun characters. Hobbs and Shaw continue that formula while also further developing its title characters. To start, Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham carry this movie the whole way through. Whether it is their physicality or witty on-screen banter, both men are entertaining to watch as they take the audience on a wild ride with plenty of laughs and a surprising amount of heart. Venessa Kirby has her share of badassery as Shaw's sister matching her male costars in both wit and fighting. Idris Elba is fun to watch as antagonist Brixton. Though not as compelling of a threat as I would have liked, he is still a very fun and entertaining element of the movie I enjoyed. The thing that I really enjoyed about Hobbs and Shaw was something that I mentioned earlier. Now an action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham pretty much sells itself. But the fact that the film takes time to further develop these two characters and dive deeper into who they are is something I really have to give the production team credit for. The basis of these films is the importance of family and Hobbs and Shaw make sure that message is felt throughout. All that said, this is still an action movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and the film makes that clear. Over the top action set pieces and beautifully choreographed fight sequences are adrenaline-inducing and fun in all aspects. The Fast and Furious franchise makes it clear it is not here to adhere to logic or the laws of physics and this spinoff is a continuation of that. Overall, Hobbs and Shaw was a welcome addition to the series and a great way to expand the franchise beyond the main films. While it won't burn as much rubber as the predecessors, the movie has heart, action and plenty of power to be a fun time at the cinema

Rating and Final Thoughts

Action, heart, and surprises galore make Hobbs and Shaw all-out fun ride at the cineplex
and intriguing addition to the Fast and Furious series.
