2023 Summer Movie Season - Monthly Recap (June 2023)

2023 SMS June Recap

Happy hump day followers. Yesterday might have been Independence Day, but the fireworks were present throughout June. We were blessed with an abundance of cinematic gold in month 2 in what is quickly becoming one of the most gloriously chaotic summer movie seasons we have ever witnessed. With the July lineup on the docket, let’s try to catch our breath and break down the madness of June in our latest monthly recap.

Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse

Miles Morales' second adventure lived up to everyone's expectations and delivered one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. With animation that continues to push the envelope and a rollicking story that ends with the promise of some full-on multiversal chaos, this web slinging adventure is essential viewing for fans and moviegoers alike

Transformers: Rise of The Beasts

Who knew that getting filmmakers with a love for a series would benefit it so well. The latest entry in the Transformers franchise delivered one of the most genuinely fun movies so far as it builds off of the momentum of Bumblebee. With the bombastic action the series is known for present throughout, a killer soundtrack bursting with 90s bangers, and filled with humor and heart, this is the most fun a Transformers movie has been in a long time. With the promise of more exciting things for the franchise to come thanks to a game-changing ending, the robots in disguise are back and ready for newfound relevance.

DC's The Flash

A lot of conversations around this film have occurred both positive and negative. One cannot ignore the dark cloud surrounding this film and what it means for the industry moving forward. That said, The Flash still managed to be a fun and engaging superhero outing. With so much uncertainty about the DC cinematic heroverse especially after the lukewarm reception and financial returns, the future of this franchise is in a dire state, especially with 2 more DC films still on the schedule for this year. Only time will tell if the upcoming DCU will find its footing early or stall before it picks up.

Elemental

Pixar has been taking some hits lately from people who have been questioning whether the studio has hit a snag creatively. Personally, I'm happy to say that their latest addition to the portfolio is a sign that the studio is doing just fine. Elemental really showcased why Pixar is the best at what they do with an incredibly nuanced and emotionally earnest romantic comedy. Full of imagination and visual flair, Elemental is one of the feel-good movies of the summer and a strong reminder of what this special studio is capable of.

Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny

Harrison Ford has played many iconic roles in his career. None are more iconic than his tenure as Henry Jones Jr. With Dial of Destiny, Ford closes the book on one of his career-defining roles in thrilling fashion with a finale that has its share of faults but still has plenty of things that make this last adventure one worth taking. A tip of the hat to our favorite teacher/explorer.
