2023 Summer Movie Season - Monthly Recap (August 2023)

2023 SMS August Recap

Hello followers. I hope you all are enjoying your final day of August. The end of August is pretty significant for it officially marks the end of another Summer Movie Season. This one has truly been a whirlwind and I for one have had a blast. Before we officially close the chapter on another great summer at the cinema, let’s recap all that went down over the course of month 4 in our last monthly recap of the year.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

Mikey, Donnie, Leo, and Raph made a triumphant return to the silver screen this month in one of the year’s breakout animated hits. Despite comparisons to a similar-looking film, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem managed to sport its own unique style and usher in a promising new era for the heroes in a half shell.

Meg 2: The Trench

There are some movies where you know exactly what you’re getting into. That was the case with the sequel to the hit campy aquatic thriller from 2018. With even more shark-based thrills than its predecessor, The Meg 2 delivered on its promise of insanity but also may have prompted others to steer clear of its shallow waters.

Blue Beetle

DC’s year at the cinema has been a mishmash of controversy and overzealous baggage. With its 2 previous releases falling short of expectations both financially and critically, the studio definitely needed some goodwill heading into the fall. Thankfully, Jaime Reyes came through in the clutch in true blue fashion. An action-packed and heartfelt superhero adventure, Blue Beetle managed to be DC’s most standout addition to the series with talk of it being part of the future blueprint moving forward still on the table. It may not be the most large-scale film in the genre, but it’s some much-needed good news for a franchise still trying to refind its groove.

Gran Turismo

Making the leap from amateur to the pros is no easy task. It’s a whole different animal making it from the gaming chair to the driver seat of one of the fastest vehicles known to man. In the ultimate underdog story of gamer turned pro, Gran Turismo took what was great about their signature racing sim and crafted an engaging story about overcoming personal, mental, and physical obstacles on the path to becoming a champion. The path may not be easy, but the victory that comes with it is as sweet as they come.
